In spite of the unusual name this small harbour between Blyth and Whitley Bay has a lot of history attached to it. The coal and glass trade flourished here just over 200 years ago - I wonder if the bottle in the bottom of the boat is an old bottle from this time?
The bottle may well have come from the bottom of the harbour. There was (as you must know!) a bottle factory on top of the bank near where the church is now. I've dug a few nice items out of that harbour when I was going through my 'bottling' phase.
These photos are just up my street Julia. Fantastic and I love the name of the boat 'Frindship'. I wonder if two friends shared it in the first place? Interesting to read about the bottle factory that used to be there. When I was a child I used to love digging up pieces of old clay smoking pipes from my GM's garden and used to come across the odd very old looking bottle too.

ReplyDeleteIf my link had worked it gave the history of SS. Can't work out why it didn't - I even edited it!
